Likewise, murine influenza infection resulted in increased levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines in both plasma and lungs, and enhanced pulmonary neutrophil influx upon pneumococcal infection 7 days later [10] . In the present study, we demonstrate that a systemic LPS challenge in the acute phase of influenza infection (4 days post-infection) results in an enhanced pulmonary, but not systemic pro-inflammatory cytokine response.
