Therefore, viruses that are defective in their ability to antagonize the host type I interferon system are often unable to replicate and spread efficiently within the host, illustrating the importance of viral immune evasion strategies in determining whether a virus will be pathogenic ( Figure 2) . (b) If the virus effectively interferes with the type I interferon response, interferon will be prevented from inducing a robust antiviral state within the host, and the virus is able to replicate to higher levels, will spread more efficiently, and may cause more severe disease.
