We used publicly available national data for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) testing and deaths from COVID-19, which were linked to regulatory public health data, to describe the evolution of outbreaks of COVID-19 in all care homes in one large health region in Scotland. In accordance with NHS Lothian public health team practice during the COVID-19 pandemic, we defined the start of a COVID-19 outbreak in a care home as the date when the first resident had a positive test for SARS-CoV-2, using regional virology laboratory PCR testing of nasopharyngeal swabs.	./cache/cord-286193-3yy9exry.txt	./txt/cord-286193-3yy9exry.txt
