Applications of nanotechnology in medicine are particularly promising and areas such as molecular imaging, disease diagnosis, bioactive encapsulation and targeted delivery at specific sites in the body are being intensively investigated and some products undergoing clinical trials (Moghimi et al., 2005; Shaffer, 2005; Wilkinson, 2003) . Usefulness of high-resolution scanning probe imaging in the study of lipidic gene transfer vectors and the interaction between liposomes and DNA molecules have recently been reviewed by Mozafari et al.
