The West Nile virus is a member of the family Flaviviridae, from the Latin flavus, meaning "yellow." The family was named for the yellow fever virus, which tends to cause liver damage, giving its victims a yellow jaundiced appearance ( Fig. 5.2 ). The disease is caused by Borrelia bacteria, notably Borrelia burgdorferi, and is spread by the same vector as Nantucket fever/babesiosis: the Ixodes tick, also called the deer tick.
