Due to the diversity of clinical manifestations, the brain lesions of dogs with distemper leukoencephalitis are classified as acute, subacute and chronic, depending on the amount of viral particles, the extension of the myelin loss and the composition and severity of the inflammatory infiltrate (Alldinger et al., 1993; Wünschmann et al., 1999; Silva et al., 2009) .
