The etiology causing his illness was identified as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS CoV); it was likely transmitted to at least 10 additional persons. Other pathogens, including members of the Paramyxoviridae family, and human metapneumovirus (hMPV) were considered as causative of this new clinical illness which became known as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome or SARS.
