Clearance of an MHV strain that primarily infects neurons is delayed in the absence of IFN-gamma, suggesting that it may affect viral control in other cell types as well without being absolutely required for clearance (Lane et al, 1997) . The contribution of humoral immunity to viral clearance and persistent infection in the CNS has been investigated using mice de cient in secreted antibodies or B cells Bergmann et al, 2001; Matthews et al, 2001) . These data suggest that T cells play a role in controlling viral titers, even before 5 d.p.i.
