We conducted a population-based case-control survey of all children aged less than 5 years and living in a large rural area, with intensive animal farming, admitted to hospitals or notified to the public health department (as reportable diseases), with symptoms of acute diarrhoea during a period of 21 months. We defined a case as a child who was (i) a resident of the study area; (ii) aged from 6 months to 5 years; (iii) either (a) hospitalized for diarrhoea in the absence of a diagnosed chronic gastrointestinal disease; or (b) notified to the public health department with a laboratory diagnosis of gastroenteritis for one of the microbial enteric pathogens of interest.	./cache/cord-343234-ps12f9jq.txt	./txt/cord-343234-ps12f9jq.txt
