Our findings may lend further support to the social compensation hypothesis (Bonetti et al., 2010; Weidman et al., 2012) and the CIUT (Kardefelt-Winther, 2014) such that social anxiety and lower self-esteem could lead to favoring CMC -indicated by higher scores on problematic internet and SNS use measures -as a compensatory behavior to cope with fear of negative evaluation.
