The articles were evaluated in terms of annual and country-specific output, theme, domain clusters, international collaboration networks, citations, topical evolution related to keywords and co-occurrence networks, co-authorship, and funding. We used the search term "Plesiomonas shigelloides" to identify primary research articles published between 1990 and 2017. Health emergencies (e.g., outbreaks of infection) relating to emerging viral pathogens including Zika and Chikungunya viruses have driven the generation of new scientific knowledge, resulting in a significant increase in the number of research articles on these subjects [68] .
