Hospitalized patients had typical presentations of pulmonary TB if they had: (a) a prolonged cough for >3 weeks; (b) clinical suspicion of pulmonary TB based on chest radiography, such as cavitary pulmonary lesions, upper lobe diseases, or miliary lesions; or (c) already received a confirmed diagnosis of pulmonary TB by a positive sputum culture of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, positive acid-fast stain (AFS), or positive TB PCR, before the hospitalization.
