Sex, age, presence of CAD and/or other types of CVD, hypertension, cerebrovascular diseases and diabetes mellitus increase mortality in patients with COVID-19. Therefore, the present meta-analysis is aimed to quantify the risk of mortality in relation to sex, age and pre-existing CVD in COVID-19 patients, and attempt to identify the potential factors involved in such a causation. In our analysis, we quantified the risk of death in almost 8500 COVID-19 patients in relation to sex, age, pre-existing CVD and cardiovascular risk factors. The third finding of our meta-analysis is that the presence of cardiovascular diseases, is associated with a higher risk of mortality when compared to COVID-19 patients without pre-existing CVD.
