RESULTS: Validation on 145 field specimens from Vietnam and Malaysia showed that the assay was specific without cross reactivity to a number of other infuenza strains as well as human respiratory related pathogens. In this study, we describe the development of a nucleic acid detection test that is rapid, specific and sensitive, thus allowing greatly improved detection of the H5N1 avian influenza A virus. To establish the specificity of the assays for H5N1 subtype detection, we then tested the primers on several known strains of influenza A viruses derived from avian sources (H3N8, H5N3, H7N3 and H9N2). A total of 145 field samples comprising of known and suspect cases from chickens, ducks and muscovies isolated from Vietnam and Malaysia during the 2004 to 2005 outbreak were tested for H5N1 RNA (Table Detection of H5N1 avian influenza A virus by one-step RT-PCR 2). ./cache/cord-312544-vip4jtlv.txt ./txt/cord-312544-vip4jtlv.txt
