Frances's father, Charles Burney, was noted for his personal charm, and even more for his talents as a musician, a musicologist, a composer and a man of letters.[7] In 1760 he moved his family to London, a decision that improved their access to the cultured elements of English society, and so their social standing.[7] They lived amidst an artistically inclined social circle that gathered round Charles at their home in Poland Street, Soho. Esther and Susanna were sent by their father to be educated in Paris, while at home Frances educated herself by reading from the family collection, including Plutarch's Lives, works by Shakespeare, histories, sermons, poetry, plays, novels and courtesy books.[12] She drew on this material, along with her journals, when writing her first novels. ./cache/en-wikipedia-org-3411.html ./txt/en-wikipedia-org-3411.txt
