In this paper, the authors will explore a concept that has been frequently adopted in the literature on pedagogical innovations: the "learning ecology" (hereinafter LE) construct, defined the literature with the aim of analysing: (1) the varying definitions given to the concept, including the ontological perspective underlying LE; (2) the methodological approaches adopted to be placed in the area of technology (development of e-learning environments) and STEM education, supporting the idea of disciplinary fragmentation.
