Artabanus may have had personal ambitions for the throne since, subsequently, he conspired with Megabyzus to have Artaxerxes killed. But Megabyzus revealed the plot to Artaxerxes, who put Artabanus and Aspamitres to death for the murders of Xerxes, Darius[3] and his own attempted murder. Classical sources[edit] Herodotus, Histories, book IX External links[edit] ^ According to Diodorus of Sicily, however, Darius was killed before ascending the throne. ^ Artaxerxes made the co-conspirators responsible for Darius' death.
