Garvey Rev. Simon Harak, S.J., author of several books on ethics, culture and nonviolence, will give a lecture on “Iraq and Empire: A Gospel Analysis” Thursday (Nov. 7) at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Hesburgh Center for International Studies.p. Father Harak, a Jesuit priest who received master’s and doctoral degrees in theology from Notre Dame in 1984 and 1986, respectively, has since 1988 been an active member of Voices in the Wilderness, an organization devoted to ending U.S. economic sanctions and opposing war against Iraq. A frequent visitor to Iraq, he intends to argue that recent American policy seems designed to form the United States as an empire and that it has eroded civil liberties at home while generating international friction in the Middle East. He also intends to examine these developments in light of the Gospel.p.
