Garvey Rev. Gerhard Böwering, S.J., professor of Islamic studies at Yale University, will give the first three of this years Erasmus Lectures in the University of Notre Dames Hesburgh Center auditorium later this month.p. Father Böwerings lectures have the collective title “Islam and Christianity: The Inner Dynamics of Two Cultures of Belief.” He will speak on “Origins and Common Roots” at 5 p.m. Oct. 25 (Monday), on “One God with Many Faces” at 5 p.m. Oct. 27 (Wednesday), and on “Scripture and Tradition” at 4 p.m. Oct. 29 (Friday). The series will be continued in the spring semester.p. A scholar of world religions, Father Böwering has taught at Yale since 1984 and chaired its Council on Middle East Studies from 1985 to 1995. He also has taught at the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Innsbruck and Princeton University. He is the author of a leading work in Sufi studies, “Mystical Vision of Existence in Classical Islam: The Qur’anic Hermeneutics of the Sufi Sahl at-Tustari”, and has contributed articles to the “Encyclopaedia Iranica.” He also has published the Arabic edition of “As-Sulami’s Minor Qur’an Commentary: Ziyadat al-haqa’iq.” His current work concerns the Islamic conception of time.p.
