John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., will be televised by C-SPAN at8 p.m.and11 p.m.(EST) Thursday (Nov. 24). TitledWhy God? Understanding Religion and Enacting Faith in a Plural World,the forum featured four world religious leaders – Naomi Chazan, professor of political science and African studies at Hebrew University of Jerusalem, a former member of Israels parliament, and a three-decade participant in the Israeli-Palestine peace process; John C. Danforth, former U.S. senator and former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations; Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, founder and chief executive officer of the American Society for Muslim Advancement (ASMA) and imam of New York Citys largest mosque; and Cardinal Oscar Andrés Rogríguez Maradiaga, S.D.B., of Honduras. Retired NBC Nightly News anchor Tom Brokaw was the moderator. The two-hour forum also featured two Notre Dame faculty members – Asma Afsaruddin, associate professor of Arabic and Islamic studies in the classics department, and Lawrence E. Sullivan, professor of world religions in the theology and anthropology departments – and two students – Kathleen Fox, a junior theology and philosophy major from Kansas City, and Kroc Institute graduate student Denis Okello of Uganda. Initiated by Father Jenkins, the Notre Dame Forum will be an annual event in which the University will bring world leaders to campus to share their experiences and advice with Notre Dame students who are preparing to enter the public debate and shape professional life.
