Garvey William B. Lawless, former dean of the University of Notre Dame Law School, died Monday (April 23) inSan Franciscoafter an illness.He was 84. A native ofBuffalo,N.Y., Lawless was editor of the Notre Dame Lawyer before receiving his law degree from the University in 1944.He did naval service in the South Pacific following his graduation, studied at theUniversityofBuffaloand earned a degree in constitutional law fromHarvardUniversityin 1950. He was in private practice inBuffaloand served from 1960 to 1968 onNewYorks Supreme Court before returning to Notre Dame where he served as dean of theLawSchoolfrom 1968 to 1971.TheLawSchooldoubled in size and established itsLondonprogram during his tenure, which also included the schools centennial celebration. The Lawless family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to support scholarships for Notre Dame law students.
