Brown As death counts continue to rise in the Middle East, the executive director of Human Rights Watch will address the question “The War in Iraq: Justified as Humanitarian Intervention?” on Tuesday (April 20) at the University of Notre Dame.p. The lecture by Kenneth Roth will begin at 4:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Hesburgh Center for International Studies. He will give a second talk at 12:30 p.m. April 21, also in the auditorium, titled “Counterterrorism: Are Human Rights an Obstacle or Part of the Solution?”p. The events, which are open to the public, comprise the 10th annual Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., Lectures in Ethics and Public Policy. They are sponsored by Notre Dame’s Joan B. Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies.p. Human Rights Watch is the largest U.S.-based international human rights organization. It reports on and seeks to curb abuses in some 70 countries. Roth, director since 1993, has conducted investigations around the world, devoting special attention to issues of justice and accountability for gross abuses of human rights, standards governing military conduct, the human rights policies of the United States and the United Nations, and the responsibilities of multinational businesses.p.
