Garvey The feast of St. Thomas Aquinas, patron saint of students and universities, will be observed at the University of Notre Dame with a vigil Mass at5:15 p.m.Friday (Jan. 27) in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. Rev. Brian E. Daley, S.J., Catherine F. Huisking Professor of Theology, will be the presiding celebrant at the Mass, and sacred music will be provided by the Notre Dame Liturgical Choir. The celebration of the feast of Thomas Aquinas is particularly important for the Notre Dame community, said John O’Callaghan, associate professor of philosophy and director of Notre DamesJacquesMaritainCenter. We ought to look to his example for a model of faith that seeks understanding, in which no truth is foreign, but comes from God.Catholic education is an extraordinary gift that the Church can give to the world, but only if it remembers the truth from which it springs. We ought to take our lead from saints like Aquinas, whose own lead came fromSt. JohnsGospel, ‘Veritas vos liberabit, that is, ‘the truth will set you free. The Mass is being sponsored by theMaritainCenterand the Departments of Theology and Philosophy.
