Garvey Arnold F. Ludwig, who directed Notre Dames Executive Master of Business Administration program from 1984 to 2001, died Tuesday (July 25) at the Mayo Clinic inRochester,Minn.He was 72. A 1956 graduate of theUniversityofWisconsin, where he studied the sciences and management, Ludwig served as director of its alumni association from 1979 to 1984.He earned his MBA degree from theUniversityofIllinoisin 1981. Ludwig worked for the Seaway Candy Company of Toledo, Ohio, a leading producer of the chocolates used for school and other institutional fundraisers, and founded and served as president of two other businesses, the Ludwig Candy Company of Toledo and Basic Computer Literacy, Inc., of Manteno, Ill., before joining Notre Dames business faculty as director of the executive MBA program in 1984. A popular and highly regarded teacher, he was honored by Notre Dames Mendoza College of Business at his retirement in 2001 by the establishment of the Arnie Ludwig Award for Excellence in Teaching. Under Arnie’s leadership, we were able to start and sustain executive programs in a city with very limited market potential while earning a reputation for academic rigor and client service,said Carolyn Woo, Martin J. Gillen Dean of the college.His vision to initiate our distance-learning program was an act of incredible entrepreneurial acumen, and we now operate in the top tier of such technologies with programs few schools can match. A visitation will be held Sunday (July30) at3 p.m.at Kaniewski Funeral Home (3545 N. Bendix Drive), and a funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday (July 31) at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart.
