Patrick J. Flynn, professor of computer science and engineering and concurrent professor of electrical engineering at the University of Notre Dame, has been named a fellow of the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR). He is the first Notre Dame faculty member to be named an IAPR fellow.

IAPR is an international association of nonprofit, scientific or professional organizations concerned with pattern recognition, computer vision and image processing. The IAPR fellow designation recognizes outstanding contributions to IAPR and to the field of pattern recognition. The society elects fellows biannually and their number may not exceed 0.25 percent of the total IAPR membership.

Flynns research interests include computer vision, biometrics, image processing and pattern recognition. He has served on the editorial boards of three of his fields major journals, including Pattern Recognition Letters, published by IAPR.

Flynn was a visiting faculty member at Notre Dame from 1990 to 1991 and joined the faculty full time in 2001. He codirects Notre Dames Computer Vision Laboratory and is currently funded by the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Justice and UNISYS.

Flynn also is a senior member of theInstituteofElectricaland Electronic Engineers and a member of the Association for Computing Machinery.
