Kafatos, director general of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg, Germany, and Distinguished Nieuwland Lecturer for 1998, will speak at 4 p.m. Tuesday (Nov. 24) in the auditorium of the Galvin Life Sciences Building at the University of Notre Dame. Titled “The New Biology: Molecular Genetics of the Malaria Vector Mosquito as a Case Study,” the talk is free and open to the public.p. Kafatos earned his bachelor’s degree in zoology from Cornell University in 1961 and completed his master’s and doctoral degrees in biology at Harvard University in 1965. He has served as a professor of biology at Harvard, the University of Athens and the University of Crete and was director of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology Research Center of Crete from 1982-93.p. Kafatos has published more than 250 papers in journal publications and received the G.J. Mendel Honorary Gold Medal for Merit in the Biological Sciences from the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in 1995.
