Garvey A panel discussion on the remarkable victory of the Islamist party Hamas in the Palestinian elections last month will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday (Feb. 9) in Hesburgh Center Auditorium of the University of Notre DamesHesburghCenterfor International Studies. The discussion,Assessing the Recent Palestinian Elections: Historical Background and Future Implications,is being sponsored by Notre Dames Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies. Panelists will be Joyce Dalsheim, Rockefeller visiting fellow at the Kroc Institute; Asher Kaufman, assistant professor of history at Notre Dame; and Rashied Omar, coordinator of the Kroc Institutes Program in Religion, Conflict and Peacebulding. Dalsheim, an anthropologist whose scholarly interests include nationalism, settler colonialism and regions of intense conflict, has studied the quarrels surrounding the Jewish settlements in Israeli-occupied territory.An activist in the peace movement in theHoly Land, she has lived and pursued research in Palestinian villages inIsrael. Kaufman, author ofReviving Phoenicia: The Search for Identity inLebanon,has written on the evolution of Hezbollah, Israeli policy in theMiddle East, and boundary disputes in the region. His recent research concerns memory and forgetfulness in the Lebanese civil war and the 1982 Israeli invasion ofLebanon.
