O’Brien, emeritus associate professor of music and director of bands at the University of Notre Dame. O?Brien, who died Tuesday in St. Paul’s Retirement Community in South Bend, was 82.p. The director of Notre Dame’s concert and marching bands from 1952-86, O’Brien was the honorary lifetime president of the National Catholic Bandmasters Association, which he founded in 1953. He also was a member of the American Bandmasters Association and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.p.
