Latino Obesity: Using Research for Understanding and Actionwill bring together faculty and public health practitioners from around the country to address the social, cultural and economic factors associated with obesity among Latinos.Among those expected to attend are experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Pan American Health Organization, as well as from other universities and community-based health organizations. Supported in part by the U.S. Department of Health and Human ServicesOffice of Minority Health, the workshop is expected to stimulate applied research to promote wellness in Latino communities, with an emphasis on strategies to increase physical activity and healthy dietary practices. The Institute for Latino Studies was established in 1999 to promoteunderstanding and appreciation of the Latino experience in theUnitedStatesthrough research, education and outreach. Its areas of studyinclude Latino spirituality, art, literature, history, politics andsocioeconomic conditions. Headquartered at Notre Dame, IUPLR is a national consortium of university-based centers dedicated to the advancement of the Latino intellectual presence in theUnited States.It works to expand the pool of Latino scholars and leaders and increase the availability of policy-relevant Latino-focused research.
