Emily Hallinan of Centerville, Ohio, and Tiffany Roman of Granger, Ind., both juniors at the University of Notre Dame, are semifinalists in a competition sponsored by the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) to design a new state license plate. p. Hallinan and Roman, marketing and graphic design majors, respectively, created their designs as part of a Notre Dame graphic design course in which students were asked to create a license plate that communicates necessary identifying government information and serves as a graphic source of state pride. The course was taught by Robert Sedlack, visiting assistant professor of art, art history and design. p. Hallinan and Roman’s designs are two of only 16 semifinal selections from a pool of more than 1,400 entries statewide. p. “This contest is a great opportunity for Hoosiers to select one of the most visible symbols of our history and heritage,” said BMV Commissioner Gary A. Gibson. “Indiana’s license plates not only represent the bureau, they also represent the state and its heritage. When people from other states see our license plates, they see people saying, ’We’re proud to be from Indiana.’” p. Final judging will take place this week, after which the general public will cast ballots to determine the winning design and slogan. Voting will begin Monday (May 7) at any BMV license branch or on the Web at http://www.bmvexpress.org . The polls will close May 18 (Friday) and the BMV will announce the final winner by the end of the month. p.
