The event will feature free food, music, games and face painting. Representatives of the Notre Dame Fire Department, South Bend Police and Fire departments and various community organizations will be on hand to answer questions and provide information about the neighborhood and community in general. The event, hosted annually the weekend of the first away football game, is intended to introduce Notre Dame students to the neighborhood and its residents as a foundation upon which to build lasting relationships between the two groups based on confidence and trust. Located directly south of campus, the Northeast Neighborhood is bounded by Angela Boulevard and Edison Road on the north; Twyckenham Drive on the east; Colfax Avenue on the south; and the St. Joseph River and Michigan Street on the west. It includes Eddy Street Commons. “If you really want to meet your neighbors, what a great opportunity for Notre Dame students and the community to bond,” said Lu Ella Webster, adult programs coordinator for the Robinson Community Learning Center and a member of the Northeast Neighborhood Council. The picnic will take place in the parking lot of the RCLC or inside the community center in the event of rain. The center is located at 921 N. Eddy St., South Bend, just south of Eddy Street Commons at Howard Street/Corby Boulevard.
