Under the leadership of acclaimed tenor Mark Beudert, visiting assistant professor of opera at Notre Dame, the track will introduce students to the vocation of singing through study of technical challenges, theory and history of the art form, as well as the nature of musical performance and its place in society. An internationally celebrated performer, Beudert is director of the Bel Canto Northwest Vocal Institute atPortlandStateUniversity. He has performed with prestigious operas around the world, including the Washington and New York City Operas; the Lyric Opera ofQueensland,Australia; the Scottish Opera; and the English National Opera. A graduate ofColumbiaUniversity, he earned his master’s and doctoral degrees at theUniversityofMichigan. Summer Experience participants will be in residence at Notre Dame for two weeks, June 26 to July 8, taking part in one of 10 academic tracks. In addition to opera and song, other tracks are: acting for stage and film, business/entrepreneurship/investing, film and video production, life sciences, literature, policy debate and public speaking, pre-law, psychology and theology. Students are selected to participate in the program based on their high school transcripts PSAT , SAT or ACTscores, recommendations from teachers and guidance counselors, personal essays, and a commitment to community service. In addition to academic courses and fieldwork, students participate in evening and weekend workshops, recreational activities, field trips, and social and community service opportunities. They also experience the spiritual and social connections that come with being part of the Notre Dame community. The cost for the Summer Experience is $2,200, which includes tuition, housing, meals, extracurricular activities and field trips. Outstanding high school students should apply for the academic track of their choice by March 31 (Friday).
