DeGioia, president of Georgetown University and a member of the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics, will speak on the interplay of athletics and academics at 4 p.m. Monday (Aug. 18) in the Browning Cinema of the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center at the University of Notre Dame. TitledAcademic Engagement and Intercollegiate Athletics: Issues, Opportunities and Challenges,the talk is an invitational event under the sponsorship of the Office of the President, Faculty Board on Athletics and Department of Athletics. DeGioia became Georgetowns first lay president in 2001. He previously held a variety of senior administrative positions at Georgetown, including senior vice president for university-wide operations and dean of student affairs. A professorial lecturer in the Department of Philosophy, he has taught courses onEthics and Global Development,Human Rights: A Culture in CrisisandWays of Knowing. Under DeGioias leadership, Georgetown completed in December 2003 the largest fund-raising effort in its history, theThird Century Campaign.The $1 billion capital campaign benefited Georgetowns Main, Medical, and Law Center campuses to secure endowment funds for curriculum and faculty support, increase student financial aid, and build and renovate facilities. DeGioia is a board member of the American Council on Education, the Association of American Colleges and Universities, and Campus Compact, and is an executive committee member of the Council on Competitiveness. He is chair of the Consortium on Financing Higher Education, serves on the Business-Higher Education Forum and is a former chair of the Big East Conference executive committee.
